Marrow March

Tower defense tips for beginners

Updated

Tower defense games differ in their towers, maps and enemies, but the same few ideas win most of them. These ten work almost everywhere, from Kingdom Rush to idle tower defense games like The Tower and Marrow March.

1. Build where the path bends

A tower at a corner or a U-turn covers the path twice, so every enemy spends longer in range. Straight open stretches waste range.

2. Upgrade before you spread

A few strong defenders usually beat many weak ones: upgrades tend to scale better than numbers, and a well-placed strong tower keeps paying as the waves grow.

3. Mix single-target and splash

Splash damage clears crowds of weak enemies; single-target damage kills the big ones. A defense with only one of them fails against the other.

4. Answer armour and shields on purpose

Armoured enemies shrug off weak hits, so bring something that pierces or hits hard. Shielded or flying enemies need their own counter. When a new enemy type appears, ask what beats it before you build more of what you have.

5. Slow them down

Slows, knockbacks and pushes do not kill anything, but they multiply every other tower by keeping enemies in range longer. One slowing tower at the right spot is worth more than another damage tower.

6. Read the next wave

Most games tell you what is coming. Build for the next wave, not the last one, and keep some gold for the surprise.

7. Put traps where they bunch

Traps and area damage pay most where enemies crowd together: at choke points, at the start of the path, or just before your wall.

8. Plan for the boss

Bosses have more health than anything else and often an ability of their own. Have enough single-target damage ready before they arrive, and keep any big one-off ability for them.

9. Invest early

Anything that increases income pays back most when bought early. In idle and incremental tower defense games the same goes for permanent upgrades: spending on them first makes every later run easier.

10. Losing is information

A wave that breaks your defense shows exactly where it was weak. In incremental tower defense games a lost run still pays into permanent upgrades, so the next attempt starts stronger.

In Marrow March

The same ideas hold with our game's own twists: one strong archer beats three weak ones, wizards belong where the horde bunches, windcallers buy time rather than kills, and the ballista is the answer when skeleton archers stand off out of reach. When the wall falls, the fight moves onto the road inside, where soldiers can stand too. The beginner's guide covers the rest.

Questions

What is the most important tower defense tip?

Place defenses where enemies stay in range longest, usually at bends and choke points, and upgrade a few strong ones before spreading out.

How do I beat armoured enemies in tower defense?

Use damage that pierces armour or hits hard in single blows; many small hits are mostly absorbed.
