The best idle tower defense games
Updated
An idle tower defense game keeps the genre's core, towers against waves, and adds the incremental loop: the fight runs largely on its own, and what you earn buys upgrades that make every later run stronger.
We make Marrow March, so it is on this list; it is marked as ours and it comes last. The rest are games we would point a friend to.
The Tower – Idle Tower Defense
Tech Tree Games · iOS, Android · Free, with in-app purchases
The best-known idle tower defense: one tower in the middle of the screen, endless waves, and a workshop of permanent upgrades that every run pays into. Built for short sessions and a very long tail of tuning.
Infinitode 2
Prineside · Windows (Steam), Android, iOS · Free
A more hands-on endless tower defense with a research tree of more than 300 upgrades, most of which keep going far past where you expect them to stop. Progress syncs between phone and PC.
Sir, We Have an Orc Problem
Mumpitz Games · Windows, Linux (Steam) · Paid
Short runs against a horde of tens of thousands of orcs that pours at your base like a wave. What each run earns unlocks and upgrades turrets, so the horde that beat you last time gets a little less far every time.
Samawa Idle
Windows (Steam), Android, iOS
An incremental idle game in a tower defense frame: towers attack on their own, gold levels them up, bosses test the build, and a skill tree and a light roguelike streak shape each run.
Summoner's Greed
PIXIO · iOS, Android · Free, with in-app purchases
An endless idle tower defense with the roles swapped: you are the summoner guarding stolen treasure, and the heroes are coming for it. Your monsters sit on tower slots and grow while you are away.
The Perfect Tower II
Windows (Steam)
A mix of incremental and tower defense with idle elements, a town to build and regions to explore; deep, and happy to run for a long time.
Idle Tower Defense
Windows (Steam)
Start with a simple tower, choose its modules and beat waves for points that make the next attempt stronger: the genre boiled down to its loop.
Zero Stress King: Idle Defense
Windows (Steam)
A short, relaxing incremental game dressed as a tower defense, where every enemy ends up in the lava. Good for an evening.
Rogue Tower
Die of Death Games · Windows (Steam) · Paid
Not idle, but built on the same loop: a roguelike tower defense whose path keeps growing as you play, with unlocks that carry over from run to run.
GemCraft – Frostborn Wrath
Game in a Bottle · Windows (Steam, GOG) · Paid
For when you want to do the optimising yourself: a dark fantasy tower defense of combining gems across more than a hundred battlefields, with a skill tree and battle traits that reward long play.
Marrow MarchOur game
Enes (us) · Desktop browser · Free
Our incremental tower defense in the browser. You place and train soldiers in front of the last wall, the dead march on it in assaults, and the Essence every assault earns grows a tree of 100 permanent upgrades. When the wall falls the fight moves onto the road inside, and a prestige layer, the Ancestral Sky, lets the next line of commanders climb the same 10 ages faster.
How we chose
We looked for games where runs feed permanent upgrades and the battle can go on without constant clicking, then kept the ones that still ask real decisions of you: where to build, what to upgrade, when to start over. Two picks are not idle at all; they are here for players who want the same long progression with more hands-on play.
